THE HIGHEST TO THE LOWEST

Prompt: The Alligator Story

1) Ivan- He received the highest amount of respect from me, because he had nothing to do with the whole ordeal. He remained her friend and didn’t bash her, but he continued to stand his ground. I believe that it’s okay to disagree with a friend the way that he did and continue to be friends. I also think that he made the correct decision.

2) Gregory- I think that this was a man that was in love and he was just heartbroken to find out that the love of his life engaged in such dishonorable activities. He just didn’t want anything else to do with her. If you look at it from another point of view she did do it to be with him, but that just wasn’t acceptable. I honestly don’t think that any reason could’ve been good enough for him. He didn’t want anyone that would do something of the sort.

3) Abigail- She really doesn’t get that much respect from me, because you don’t engage in sexual activities for the trade of anything. That was just completely wrong by itself. She could have waited for another opportunity to see him or found a better way. She literally sold herself for a trip across the water. The worst thing about the situation was that she was actually happy that Slug beat Gregory up. She actually found pleasure in it. This was something that she caused and someone else had to pay for it. That was just selfish and she could have taken Gregory’s response and handled it another way.

4) Slug- This character was completely out of line for involving himself in the matter in the first place. I really don’t understand how he got into the picture anyway. I know that he had feelings for Abigail, but that didn’t give him the right to put his hands on anyone. He receives no respect from me at all.

5) Sinbad- Last but not least is Sinbad. He made Abigail have sexual intercourse with him as a payment for a service. People of any kind of integrity, does not act in this matter. This was just way below the standards of any person and he should be ashamed of himself. He portrayed himself as a person who buys sex and that is not acceptable in this society.

METAPHYSICAL ASSUMPTIONS: ABOVE AND BEYOND

PROMPT: METAPHYSICAL ASSUMPTIONS

Metaphysical assumptions play a big part in the way people live their lives. This is where the ideas of morals and values come into play. We all have our own perceptions of the world. Metaphysical assumptions sometimes determine who we will become in the world. It puts fear in us when referring to a greater power, such as religion. This is why I believe in the presences of angles, demons, and ghosts. If I didn’t I wouldn’t have any religious purpose. This mostly is determined with how a person is brought up and where he or she is from.

Some people choose to attend church every Sunday, maybe Bible Study during the week, or maybe just live their lives correctly. But through this all it’s just their way of knowing that there is a higher power. We read the Bible to find a lot of answers, but some of the “Rules” are really made up by man himself. Of course, we will allow ourselves to believe these rules because we don’t want to be condemned if not followed.

In reality, science still hasn’t confirmed a lot of questions that we all may have. We do we go after we die? Is there really such a thing as heaven or hell? Is there life after death? These are all questions that each of us have asked, but learned that they can’t be answered. This is just a better reason for us to believe in metaphysical assumptions, because it’s just a faith that we have to have in order to go on. I mean we see things everyday that we can’t explain, but we still accept them. Until now I have never thought about a lot of them twice, because we just look at things like they are just supposed to happen. We don’t worry about why or how.

Those are the kind of things that keep me believing in a higher power. It’s just all of the unexplained things that go on in everyday life. Do you just ever stop to ask who or what wakes you up every morning? These are only our own metaphysical assumptions. I have my beliefs and other people have their beliefs, but they still fall up under the same category.

GEORGE W. BUSH: CONCERNED WITH HELPING THE PEOPLE OR TAKING OVER THE WORLD

Prompt: Blog # 2 on Mailer

Is Bush really trying to help the people or making stepping – stones to take over the rest of the world? These are serious accusations, but we have to understand where Mailer is coming from. Did Bush just have to go to war or was this just the perfect opportunity to conquer the world? We can look at the fact that instead of him pulling troops out of the war, he has been adding more and asking for more funds. We were supposed to go in to help their country run as a stable democracy and that’s it. We will never be able to cease fire completely over there until they are ready to do so. This is something that has to be done within their country and we can’t continue to bully that fact around.

I really agree with Mailer on this subject, because there are too many situations pointing to the fact that the president wants to take over the world. If we think back for a moment, it’s as if he is following in the footsteps of his father. He had an office long fascination with the Middle East and so does his son. It’s like this was all planned. I don’t understand why Bush would try to take over the world knowing that he isn’t going to be in office forever, but people do crazy things.

If we just think about it, Iraq wasn’t the one who attacked us September 11th. So Why Are We AT War? Was that just a good reason to get our troops over there? Because at this time we can’t justify this war that we are involved in. I think that Bush just needed to get the troops in, because he knew that no one could just go in to pull them out. This was a classic strategy on his behalf.

There are so many reasons that are given to us for being in Iraq and some of them I do agree with, such as abolishing terrorism and the oil prices. Mailer stated that abolishing terrorism forever could never be done and I totally agree, because there will always be someone who has different beliefs. I agree with Bush, because someone had to start to defend us on that behalf. The oil prices were also a big issue, but I think that it could have been resolved in a nonviolent manner.

Either way, only Bush knows why he really went to war. We can only sit back and pray for the best at this time, because it doesn’t seem as if we have a voice anymore on the situation. Maybe during the next election these will be some of the things that we will consider.

EVIL OR NOT: TERRORISM

Prompt: Blog on Mailer

As an individual person we are all allowed to have beliefs. There are certain things that each of us may understand more than others, but we should all know that it’s okay to have our on perception. Sometimes other people may not understand why one individual has made a statement and may choose to differ. These are just some reasons why we have freedom of speech, so that we can voice our opinions.

As the author Norman Mailer states in his book, “It’s worth trying to understand terrorism in the context by which the terrorists see it.” Well this is the statement that I beg to differ, because I honestly don’t believe that any human being should understand a terrorist point of view. I believe that it is evil and nothing less. The points that are given there after are all relative, but we can’t start to understand why people are killing others because of their beliefs. I also have different beliefs than a lot of people, but of course that won’t justify why I would kill thousands. There are certain things that people are allowed to get by with, but this shouldn’t be one of them.

It seems as if 9/11 was just yesterday. I was sitting in my English classroom when I learned of the attack. I remember thinking to myself that it wasn’t real or as bad as the news was making it seem. There was just no way terrorists had attacked The United States. My heart was broken into a thousand pieces. This could not be happening to the great nation. We were under attack by our own planes that had been taking over by terrorist. This was the worst feeling ever. I honestly thought that we were going to war right then. Now, how can I try to understand their point of view when they have killed thousands of innocent people? I could only pray for them, because they had committed a terrible crime.

These are only my beliefs and I hope that we as Americans won’t start to justify why these events take place. We should try to make a stand to the government, so that we could maybe stop these things from happening through negotiation.

HOMOSEXUALS: TEACHING HIGH SCHOOL INDIVIDUALS

Prompt: Human Rights v. Majority Rule

Today is your child’s first day of High School. Of course he/she is very excited, because this is the first day of their young adult hood. We as parents are very nervous and only want the best for our young teenager. We expect the teachers to provide an excellent education and also to be a great role model. Everyone is entitled to their rights, but what if it was brought to your attention that one of your child’s teachers was a homosexual. We are all aware that we are entitled to our human rights and majority rule always come into play. How should we react to this situation? Should we immediately cause conflict or should we give the teacher his/her privacy?

This was started in Miami several years ago, the attempt to forbid in public employment discrimination based on sexual preference. The gay community has come to the conclusion to no longer hide their sexual preferences. Should individuals have rights or should the majority rule? These are decesions that only us as an individual can make.

Human rights are not often used to our advantage. We as citizens have the right to speak out on our beliefs and how we feel about different situations. Majority rule basically comes into place when a group of people decide that a situation isn’t right in their eyes. They usually try to take action on the situation that would eventually leave the main party feeling as if they don’t have rights. It’s really possible if the main party doesn’t fight for his/her beliefs.

If I was in this predicament with my child, I don’t think that I would be as judgmental. As long as my child was getting the proper education, I don’t think that it would be my right to say if she should be in the teacher’s class. Society is focused on the wrong things sometimes. We should be more focused on our own household and what perceptions our kids are receiving from us, such as being prejudice against a different sexuality preference.

DO I REALLY AGREE?

Prompt: Hijack

After September 11th, there were a lot of questions that were brought towards the government. Was the situation was handled correctly and in an orderly fashion? I personally don’t think that they could’ve have done a better job. This was not only a surprise to our nation, but to our government as well. I do feel that if there was a way to prevent this from happening that all necessary actions should have been taken. After reading the Terrorism Policy, I don’t know if necessary measures would have been taken. That’s like saying if the terrorist would have made demands then 9/11 would have still happened, because we wouldn’t have met any of their needs. To me the thousands of people that died at least deserved some kind of consideration to these matters.

Now on the other hand, I totally understand where they are coming from. If we start making negotiations we terrorist, we are really going to have some problems. There is a saying that states, “Once you do for one, you have to do for all.” Once you make that bargain with one organization you will have to make it again. That would put The United States into a terrible predicament, because we would never have our solidness to fall back on again. There are so many difficult decisions to make concerning these situations. We really have no room to speak on the government with these matters, because we aren’t in their chairs.

The government also has responsibility for the safety and welfare of persons within their boarders. This is the reason they have advanced the security programs. They believe that with these methods being taken the government can lower the risk of terrorism.

In conclusion, I think that the government has done an okay job. We as a nation can only ask for so much. Everyone has room for improvement, so I think the best thing for us to do as a nation is stand behind our government. I ONLY MEAN IN TERRORISM, NOT EVERYTHING. I won’t go into details, but there are some things that could have been left alone and our terrorism level wouldn’t be on yellow 90% of the time.

IS THERE REALLY A RIGHT OR WRONG?

Prompt: Right or Wrong?

Who decides if we are right or wrong? Some people may say a law maker or depending on the individual God (or a higher power). I honestly think that it’s everyone’s personal opinion, even though certain circumstances may seem cruel and/or harsh. As we all know there is a thin line between the two. This is where our judicial system comes into place. We sometimes don’t agree with them, but it’s what keeps society in check.

A major example would be fetal abortions. This is a touchy subject because each of us has our own opinions. There are different circumstances that may cause a female to have an abortion, which may include age, weather or not one of the parties is fund of having a child, or a sexual crime. When we put all of these into context we find that we ask ourselves, is this right or wrong?
We are all human so our emotions play a large part in our decisions.

I have a sad, but great example to share. I hope that this will put all of us into a position where we can understand and respect other people feelings. There was a young lady who attended a basketball game on an anything but a regular night. She proceeded to go to the restroom after a couple of sodas. As she was going into the stall, a male came in behind her and forced a piece of cloth material over her face. He then assaulted and rapped her. A couple of weeks later at a check up, she found out that she was pregnant. She now has a dilemma, because the cops still didn’t find the rapist. Then there was the fact that she was only fifteen years old. Her mother was already working two jobs to support her children, so this would be a great burden on her. Should she have an abortion? Under the circumstances would it be right or wrong?

Now we all have sympathy for this young lady, but some of us still don’t think that it’s right. Once again this would only be our personal opinion. These are the situations that cause us to sometimes want to change them. As we have to learn, we will have to respect everyone’s feelings about situations of this sort.
